My 2 cents

The songs of Raghu Dixit

Posted in India, something I like, Songs by urmilesh on April 16, 2011

Have been hearing a lot of Raghu Dixit lately. Just putting a small post here to let you know that I like what I heard.

You should get a listen at and judge for yourself.

Since I posted last (which it seems was SOME time back), I have seen a number of movies; have liked some and hated some. But none of them got me to write something about it, for a number of reasons. Kaminey is one exception, and a pretty good one at that.

First, I am pretty thankful that there are some directors who do not require us to leave our brains at home when we come to watch a movie (because it’s pretty much impossible to do so). Because I do not like spoon-feeding, non-linear narratives generally work for me (not the regular flashbacks that are so prevalent). And though Kaminey does not have a very complicated non-linear narrative, we do need to stay focused to understand what is happening on the screen, and to the credit of the director, it is not very taxing to stay focused.

The performances are first-rate. If Omkara made me notice Deepak Dobariyal, then Kaminey had Mikhail (I missed the name of  the actor who played this character). Shahid Kapur brought enough nuances to the twin roles he portrayed, this was pretty different from what he had done till now. Priyanka was adorable, Amol Gupte was effective. Actually everyone fitted what he/she played and so a blanket ‘well played’ is in order.

There are some scenes which I want to mention for the way they were conceptualized/portrayed but I guess I will hold off on that for now.I do not want to share the story here. Not because there is some high-voltage suspense, but because it would be better appreciated as it unfolds in front of you. So what I am saying is, take your brains with you and go watch Kaminey.

Oh and Yes….the music is awesome and very well used in the movie.

That was easy

Long back I’d said that I am trying to move to a piracy-free life. Well I did realize that is mighty difficult but my efforts are ON.

One of my friends, who has no competition for the crown of “PIRACY KING” recently bought an original music CD (soundtrack of the movie Rock ON)…and the reason was that in the end credits of the movie the producers had asked the viewers to not download the songs but buy the music CDs in case they like the music. I didn’t know it was that easy on the part of the film industry to curb music piracy. Simple 2 step procedure:

  1. Ensure you create good music
  2. appeal to the music fan inside the music pirate.

It may not work on all of the people; but hey, something IS better than nothing…isn’t it?

Wish you were here…

Posted in Life, Me, Random Thoughts, Songs by urmilesh on November 19, 2007

So, so you think you can tell…Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Post Script: I don’t think anybody would be confused about who the source is.

K K rocks

I got a chance to attend a KK concert again courtesy Bhatia. The last time I’d seen him sing live was when he’d come to my company for some celebration and I was impressed with the way he interacted with the crowd. Not that I was not impressed with his singing, but that was there even before this live thing happened.

The concert was great as expected, and two thumbs up to KK for making this a memorable evening. His song selection is awesome even when he chooses which songs to sing while doing playback. And that makes his range great when he is doing live shows. All his songs are great (generally) and they make for really great listening when you want a fun-filled evening. And the way he moves from one song to the next, making the crowd sing along with him, making the crowd applaud not just him but his band also, making the crowd move at supposedly serious numbers, getting into banter with the crowd…and so many more small small things. All this made him a darling of the crowds.

I am not sure how much of this he will be able to use when (and if also :)) he gets to perform in front of very large crowds. But from what I have seen, he has made a very good start.

Love this song :)

This song, in many ways…fits me also. Maybe that is why I like it all the more.

She’s always a woman to me

Posted in General, Life, Me, Songs by urmilesh on December 11, 2006

She’s Always A Woman
The Stranger Released: 1977

She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child
But she’s always a woman to me

She can lead you to live
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth
But she’ll never believe you
And she’ll take what you give her as long as it’s free
She steals like a thief
But she’s always a woman to me

Oh, she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She’s ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind

She will promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she’ll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you’re bleedin’
But she’ll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself
Cause she’s always a woman to me

She is frequently kind
And she’s suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases
She’s nobody’s fool
But she can’t be convicted
She’s earned her degree
And the most she will do
Is throw shadows at you
But she’s always a woman to me

The Gold Song

Posted in Random Thoughts, Songs by urmilesh on June 14, 2006

There’s a mountain and it’s mighty high
U cannot see the top unless U fly
And there’s a molehill of proven ground
There ain’t no where 2 go if U hang around

Everybody wants 2 sell what’s already been sold
Everybody wants 2 tell what’s already been told
What’s the use of money if U ain’t gonna break the mold?
Even at the center of fire there is cold
All that glitters ain’t gold

There’s an ocean of despair
There are people livin’ there
They’re unhappy each and every day
But hell is not fashion so what U tryin’ 2 say?

Everybody wants 2 sell what’s already been sold
Everybody wants 2 tell what’s already been told
What’s the use of money if U ain’t gonna break the mold?
Even at the center of fire there is cold
All that glitters ain’t gold, no no

There’s a lady, 99 years old
If she led a good life, heaven takes her soul
Now that’s a theory and if U don’t wanna know
Step aside and make a way 4 those who want 2 go

Everybody wants 2 sell what’s already been sold (Sold)
Everybody wants 2 tell what’s already been told (Told)
What’s the use of bein’ young if U ain’t gonna get old? (Old)
Even at the center of fire there is cold (Cold)
All that glitters (glitters) ain’t gold, no no no no no
All that glitters ain’t gold
